With card prices so high it can be worthwhile to buy packs of cards.
My buying strategy
My buying strategy is based on comparison of two values:
- estimated value of a pack of cards
- purchase cost of a pack of cards.
When the estimated value of a pack of cards is at least $0.30 higher than the purchase cost, I buy one or more packs of cards.
Nine days ago I bought 3 packs of Untamed cards because I found a very good price.

Today I am going to calculate the cost-effectiveness or otherwise of buying DICE card packs based on the various purchasing methods available.
In the image on the cover you can see the calculation of the current prices of DICE card packs according to the purchase method. In fact, DICE card packs (as well as Untamed packs) can mainly be purchased with:
- Credits (1000 credits = 1$) on the Splinterlands website
- DEC tokens on the Splinterlands website
- SWAP.HIVE tokens on Hive Engine/LeoDEX.
If you buy with credits, the cost is 3000 Credits which equals $3.
If you purchase with DEC tokens, the cost is variable and depends on the value of the DEC tokens and HIVE tokens at the time of purchase. Today, 17 May 2021, the purchase price of a DEC token is 0.199 HIVE = $0.00097. One HIVE token is worth $0.485.
Based on the current values of HIVE and DEC tokens at the time of writing this post, buying a pack of DICE cards with DEC tokens is equivalent to spending 5.97 HIVE = $2.89.
On HiveEngine/LeoDex there are 2 packs of DICE cards for sale for 4.95 HIVE (SWAP.HIVE) = 2.40$.
On the Splinterlands website (SHOP section) you can buy DICE card packs in blocks of 20 packs or 100 packs. Buying 20 packs of cards in bulk grants a bonus of one free pack of cards.
Buying 100 packs of cards in bulk grants a bonus of 10 free packs of cards.
Of the various purchase methods, the lowest price is obtained by using SWAP.HIVE tokens as a payment method and buying on Hive Engine/LeoDex.
The estimated value of a pack of cards
In order to decide whether buying a pack of cards can be profitable, it is important to know the estimated value of the pack of cards you want to buy. To find out the estimated value of a pack of Untamed cards, I have always used the useful tool at https://peakmonsters.com/packs. However, this tool only calculates the estimated value of Untamed card packs and not of DICE packs.
To find out the estimated value of a pack of DICE cards I used the tool made available by the site https://www.splintercards.com/ The site is young and still under development but the creator @tehox is doing a really good job and if you are a Splinterlands player I invite you to take a look at this useful site.
According to Splintercards calculations the estimated value of a pack of DICE cards at the time of writing this post is:
- $2.00 in the situation where you have no potions
- 2.51$ in the situation where Alchemical potions are used
- 2.50$ when using Legendary potions
- 3,216$ in the situation where both Alchemical and Legendary potions are used
With very few exceptions, it is not advisable to open a DICE or UNTAMED card pack if you do not have a sufficient number of Alchemical and Legendary potions because in this case the estimated value is always lower than the purchase cost.
The calculations change considerably in the following two cases:
- You don't need to buy potions because you already have enough potions from completing the daily quests and the fortnightly seasons of Splinterlands for free.
- It is necessary to buy potions.
The potions have a cost that is added to the initial cost of the packet and to get the highest estimated value you need a total of 10 potions per packet of cards to open:
- 5 Alchemical potions
- 5 Legendary potions
In the following image you can see the calculation of the estimated profit or loss in case you already have both potions available and do not need to buy them ( Profit/Loss (Expected) column).
As you can see from the calculations, it is always worthwhile to buy a pack of cards, because the estimated value is always higher than the purchase price.
The situation changes if you have to buy the necessary potions. To the cost of each pack of cards you have to add the cost of 10 potions ($0.42).
In this case buying with credits and DEC tokens leads to an expected loss. Buying 20 packs of cards from the Splinterlands website leads to a minimal expected profit. Buying 100 packs of cards leads to an expected profit of $0.15. Buying 2 packs of cards from Hive Engine has the best expected positive result: +$0.38.
I have performed the same calculations for buying packs of Untamed cards.
Buying the DICE packs was the best purchase for today.
In fact, for the Untamed packs of cards, the best expected profit was the one obtained by buying 500 packs of cards in bulk: Expected profit $0.52148
For DICE card packs the highest expected profit is produced by buying from Hive Engine/LeoDex: Expected profit 0.81177
Important note: the profit is called "expected" because it is not a certain value and the estimated value of a pack of cards becomes more accurate as the number of packs of cards purchased increases (500+...).
I immediately bought 3 packs of DICE cards from Hive Engine and found even lower prices than I wrote in the table above:
I preferred to leave in the table calculations the prices of the packs of cards still available for purchase on Hive Engine so that my calculations can be useful to my readers.
Currently on sale: 1 pack of DICE cards for the price of 4.95 SWAP.HIVE and 50 packs of DICE cards for the price of 5.34 SWAP.HIVE.
The expected profit is also very positive for the price of 5.34 SWAP.HIVE.
After the purchase I decided to open the three packs of DICE cards immediately. 3 packs of cards are very few to hope to have a result in line with the estimated value and therefore in my case luck will play a fundamental role.
Let's see what I found in the three packs of cards.
As indicated by the Peakmonsters website the total value of the cards is $17.19 (14.89+1.14+1.16) using market prices.
I spent $4.71 on the purchase of the 3 packs of cards. I was definitely lucky but regardless of the lucky or unlucky results I will receive in the future from opening a few packs of cards, I will continue to follow my buying strategy because I believe it is valid in the medium to long term.
Not a Splinterlands player?
Any game that allows you to buy cards and tokens is never just a game, it is also an investment. I am not a financial advisor and my advice is not financial advice, it is just my personal opinion based on my experience.

Considerazioni sul costo e sul valore stimato dei pacchi di carte Dice e Untamed
Ciao Hivers e giocatori di Splinterlands, i prezzi delle carte di Splinterlands hanno registrato un forte aumento di valore negli ultimi mesi. Anche la mia collezione di carte ha aumentato considerevolmente il suo valore. Come puoi vedere dai calcoli nell'immagine seguente il 4 marzo 2021 la mia collezione di carte valeva 519.24$ oggi vale 1303.27$.
Con i prezzi delle carte così alti può essere conveniente acquistare dei pacchi di carte.
La mia strategia di acquisto
La mia strategia di acquisto si basa sul confronto tra due valori:
- valore stimato di un pacco di carte
- costo di acquisto di un pacco di carte.
Quando il valore stimato di un paccho di carte è superiore di almeno 0.30$ rispetto al costo di acquisto compro uno o più pacchi di carte.
Nove giorni fa ho comprato 3 pacchi di carte Untamed perchè ho trovato un prezzo molto vantaggioso.

Oggi calcolerò la convenienza o meno dell'acquisto dei pacchi di carte DICE in base ai vari metodi di acquisto disponibili.
Nell'immagine in copertina c'è il calcolo dei prezzi attuali dei pacchi di carte DICE in base al metodo di acquisto. Infatti i pacchi di carte DICE (come anche i pacchi Untamed) possono essere acquistati principalmente con:
- i Crediti (1000 crediti = 1$) sul sito di Splinterlands
- i token DEC sul sito di Splinterlands
- i token SWAP.HIVE su Hive Engine/LeoDEX
Acquistando con i crediti il costo è di 3000 Crediti che equivale a 3$.
Acquistando con i token DEC il costo di acquisto è invece variabile e dipende dal valore dei token DEC e dei token HIVE al momento dell'acquisto. Oggi 17 maggio 2021 il costo di acquisto di un token DEC è di 0.199 HIVE = 0.00097$ Un token HIVE vale invece 0.485$
In base ai valori attuali di HIVE e dei token DEC nel momento in cui scrivo questo post, comprare un pacco di carte DICE con i token DEC equivale a spendere 5.97 HIVE = 2.89$
Su HiveEngine/LeoDex ci sono in vendita 2 pacchi di carte DICE al prezzo di 4.95 HIVE (SWAP.HIVE) = 2.40$
Sul sito di Splinterlands (Sezione SHOP) è possibile comprare i pacchi di carte DICE in blocchi da 20 pacchi o da 100 pacchi. Comprare 20 pacchi di carte in blocco garantisce un bonus di un pacco di carte gratuito.
Comprare 100 pacchi di carte in blocco garantisce un bonus di 10 pacchi di carte gratuiti.
Tra i vari metodi di acquisto il prezzo più basso si ottiente utilizzando i token SWAP.HIVE come metodo di pagamento e comprando su Hive Engine/LeoDex.
Il valore stimato di un pacco di carte
Per decidere se comprare un pacco di carte può essere profittevole è importante conoscere il valore stimato del pacco di carte che si vuole comprare. Per conoscere il valore stimato di un pacco di carte Untamed mi sono sempre affidato all'utile tool del sito https://peakmonsters.com/packs. Questo tool però calcola solo il valore stimato dei pacchi di carte Untamed e non dei pacchi DICE.
Per conoscere il valore stimato di un pacco di carte DICE ho utilizzato il tool messo a disposizione dal sito https://www.splintercards.com/ Il sito è giovane e ancora in fase di sviluppo ma il creatore @tehox sta facendo davvero un ottimo lavoro e se sei un giocatore di Splinterlands ti invito a dare un occhiata a questo utile sito.
In base ai calcoli del sito Splintercards il valore stimato di un pacco di carte DICE nel momento in cui scrivo questo post è di:
- 2.00$ nella situazione in cui non si hanno pozioni
- 2.51$ nella situazione in cui si utilizzano le pozioni Alchemiche
- 2.50$ nella situazione in cui si utilizzano le pozioni Leggendarie
- 3.216$ nella situazione in cui si utilizzano entrambe le pozioni Alchemiche e Leggendarie
Salvo rare eccezioni, non conviene aprire un pacco di carte DICE o UNTAMED quando non si è in posseso di un sufficiente numero di pozioni alchemiche e leggendarie perchè in questo caso il valore stimato è sempre inferiore al costo di acquisto.
I calcoli cambiano considerevolmente nei seguenti due casi:
- Non è necessario comprare le pozioni perchè si è già in possesso di un numero sufficiente di pozioni ricevute in modo gratuito dal completamento delle missioni giornaliere e dal completamento delle stagioni quindicinali di Splinterlands.
- E' necessario comprare le pozioni.
Le pozioni infatti hanno un costo che va a sommarsi al costo iniziale del pacchetto e per avere il valore stimato più alto servono in totale 10 pozioni per ogni pacchetto di carte da aprire:
- 5 pozioni Alchemiche
- 5 pozioni Leggendarie
Nelle immagine seguente puoi vedere il calcolo del profitto o della perdita stimata nel caso in cui si hanno già a disposizione entrambe le pozioni e non è necessario acquistarle ( colonna Profit/Loss (Expected) ).
Come puoi vedere dai calcoli effettuati è sempre conveniente acquistare un pacco di carte poichè il valore stimato è sempre superiore al costo di acquisto.
La situazione cambia nel caso in cui si devono comprare le pozioni necessarie. Al costo di ogni pacco di carte bisogna aggiungere il costo delle 10 pozioni (0.42$)
In questo caso comprare con i crediti e con i token DEC porta ad una perdita attesa. Comprare 20 pacchi di carte dal sito di Splinterlands porta ad un profitto atteso minimo. Comprare 100 pacchi di carte porta ad un profitto atteso di 0.15$. Comprare 2 pacchi di carte da Hive Engine ha il risultato positivo atteso migliore: +0.38$.
Ho eseguito gli stessi calcoli per l'acquisto dei pacchi di carte Untamed.
Comprare i pacchi DICE è risultato per oggi l'acquisto migliore da effettuare.
Infatti per i pacchi di carte Untamed il profitto atteso migliore è risultato essere quello ottenuto acquistando 500 pacchi di carte in blocco: Profitto atteso 0.52148$
Per i pacchi di carte DICE il profitto atteso più alto è prodotto dall'acquisto da Hive Engine/LeoDex: profitto atteso 0.81177
Nota Importante: il profitto si chiama "atteso" proprio perchè non è un valore certo e il valore stimato di un pacco di carte diventa tanto più accurato con l'aumentare del numero di pacchi di carte acquistati (500+...).
Io ho subito acquistato 3 pacchi di carte DICE da Hive Engine e ho trovato prezzi ancora inferiori di quelli che ho scritto nella tabella in alto:
Ho preferito lasciare nei calcoli della tabella i prezzi dei pacchi di carte ancora disponibili per l'acquisto su Hive Engine in modo che i miei calcoli possano essere utili ai miei lettori.
Attualmente ci sono in vendita: 1 pacco di carte DICE al prezzo di 4.95 SWAP.HIVE e 50 pacchi di carte DICE al prezzo di 5.34 SWAP.HIVE.
Il profitto atteso è molto positivo anche per il prezzo di 5.34 SWAP.HIVE.
Io dopo l'acquisto ho deciso di aprire subito i tre pacchi di carte DICE. 3 pacchi di carte sono davvero pochi per sperare di avere un risultato in linea con il valore stimato e quindi nel mio caso la fortuna giocherà un ruolo fondamentale.
Vediamo insieme cosa ho trovato nei tre pacchi di carte.
Come indicato dal sito di Peakmonsters il valore totale delle carte è di 17.19$ (14.89+1.14+1.16)usando i prezzi di mercato.
Io ho speso per l'acquisto dei 3 pacchi di carte 4.71$. Sono stato decisamente fortunato ma a prescindere dai risultati fortunati o sfortunati che in futuro riceverò dall'apertura di pochi pacchi di carte continuerò a seguire la mia strategia di acquisto perchè la ritengo valida nel medio-lungo periodo.
Non sei un giocatore di Splinterlands?
Ogni gioco che prevede l'acquisto di carte e di token non è mai un semplice gioco ma è anche un investimento. Io non sono un consulente finanziario e il mio non è un consiglio finanziario ma è solo la mia personale opinione frutto della mia esperienza.
