When I read the question of the contest organized by @ocd (If money is not an issue, what toy would you buy?) I couldn't find an immediate answer and I had to think about it for a while. The reason is that, at my "tender age" of 41, I have little time to play and in general I have little time to devote to myself and maybe there is not a toy I would like for myself. I am the happy dad of a 7 year old girl and the only toys I think about are the games I would like to play with my daughter or I think about the toys I would like to give her.
If I go back in time and think of myself as a child, a toy that I have wanted for a long time and that if at that time I had the money available I would have bought immediately is without doubt the Nintendo 8 Bit: the first console produced by Nintendo in 1983.
A few years later I saw the Nintendo Entertainment System advertisement on television and it was love at first sight. I started asking my parents to grant my wish, but they didn't want to do it. The main reason was that they had heard several times on the news that video games could facilitate the onset of epilepsy and so their no was convinced, motivated and categorical.
The only way I could play with the famous plumber named Mario was to raise a lot of money.
So if at 11 years old someone had asked me the question: If money is not an issue, what toy would you buy? I would have answered without hesitation: I'd like to buy the 8-bit Nintendo (NES).
In the end I got the Nintendo but not in a very easy way. Every day, for an entire school year, before going to school I would ask my parents for money to buy a snack from the vending machine at the middle school I attended. Instead of buying the snack I would put the money aside and so every day, during recess, I would see my classmates eating tasty snacks while I fasted. But fasting didn't weigh me down at all because I had a goal to reach!
At the end of the school year I went to my father and showed him the money I had saved. I still remember the surprised look on my father's face. My father appreciated my sacrifices and said: okay today let's go buy the Nintendo you so desire!
The money I had saved was not enough but it was a good part and my father added the missing part. I still remember the excitement when I picked up for the first time the gray joypad with red buttons :) To this day I still preserve with great care my Nintendo 8 Bit
Daddy will you buy me a Nintendo Switch?
I explained to my daughter that the Nintendo Switch is an expensive gift and told her how I got my Nintendo when I was a few years older than her. The next day my daughter started collecting all the pennies she saw and found around the house to do the same thing I had done when I was a kid.
A few days before her 7th birthday she asked her grandparents and uncles to give her the money instead of presents.
Chiara didn't raise the amount needed to buy the Nintendo Switch but as my father had done with me I did the same with my daughter and added the missing part. After many years Super Mario has entered again in my house, not the one I knew but a less squared Mario, in three dimensions and definitely cooler :)
Today that I am a father, if I didn't have money problems I would buy a toy that my daughter likes so much and that she calls the "salta salta" : the trampoline.
Before the arrival of the damn covid-19, every year, during the Easter vacations and just a few steps from my house, the rides arrived and among the attractions there was also a multi trampoline. The following photo shows my daughter jumping around happily.
There are many smaller and cheaper trampolines within my reach even if they are not very strong and durable but my family and I live in an apartment and a trampoline just doesn't fit in the house.... Before buying a trampoline like the one in the photo above I should first buy a house with a nice garden and then I would need a lot of money. My daughter loves to jump on the trampoline which is a big object of her desire.
If money is no an issue, after buying a nice big house, why not buy the most expensive trampoline?
I went to Amazon and searched for the highest priced trampoline and found the item you can see in the image below.
The price? "Only" 6051.82 euros!
My daughter would be delighted to find this trampoline in her room (although then it would fit only this one and she would also be forced to sleep on the trampoline :)
But are we sure that buying such an expensive item always brings so much happiness?
I think not and especially when it comes to games and toys. Among other things, having a lot of money allows you to always and immediately satisfy a desire to buy or, if you are a parent, a request from a child. But having the object of desire always and immediately can do more harm than good. Waiting is the most important part of the pleasure of getting something and even if I had a lot of money I would always try to make my daughter desire a game before buying it and especially if the game is very expensive.
In addition, very expensive toys are often the toys that are used the least over time because they are almost perfect, ready to use and because they don't require any creative effort or construction... The most expensive games are often more of a bragging point than an opportunity for play and fun. If I look back in time, my happiest memories are of inexpensive games and toys: a soccer ball, a toy car, a handful of colored marbles, a box of Lego bricks, a fun board game...all games to play with other children or games that allow you to use your creativity and imagination.

Quando ho letto la domanda del contest organizzato da ocd (Se i soldi non sono un problema, quale giocattolo compreresti?) non sono riuscito a trovare una risposta immediata e ho dovuto pensarci un pò. Il motivo è che, alla mia tenera età di 41 anni, ho poco tempo per giocare e in generale ho poco tempo da dedicare a me stesso e forse non c'è un giocattolo che vorrei per me stesso. Sono il felice papà di di una bimba di 7 anni e gli unici giochi a cui penso sono i giochi che mi piacerebbe fare con mia figlia oppure penso ai giocattoli che mi piacerebbe regalarle.
Se torno indietro nel tempo e ripenso a me bambino, un giocattolo che ho desiderato per tanto tempo e che se a quel tempo avessi avuto i soldi a disposizione avrei comprato immediatamente c'è ed è senza dubbio la Nintendo 8 Bit: la prima console prodotta dalla Nintendo nel 1983.
Qualche anno dopo ho visto in televisione la pubblicità della Nintendo Entertainment System ed è stato un amore a prima vista, un colpo di fulmine. Ho incominciato a chiedere insistentemente ai miei genitori di esaudire il mio desiderio ma loro non volevano assolutamente accontentarmi. Il motivo principale era che avevano sentito più volte al telegiornale che i videogiochi potevano favorire l'insorgere dell'epilessia e quindi il loro no era un no convinto, motivato e categorico. L'unico modo che avevo per ottenere la Nintendo e poter giocare con il famoso idraulico di nome Mario era raccogliere un bel pò di soldi.
Quindi se a 11 anni qualcuno mi avesse posto la domanda: If money is not an issue, what toy would you buy? Avrei risposto senza esitare: vorrei la Nintendo 8 bit (NES).
Alla fine la Nintendo l'ho ottenuta ma non in modo molto semplice. Ogni giorno, per un intero anno scolastico, prima di recarmi a scuola chiedevo ai miei genitori i soldi per comprare una merenda dal distributore automatico della scuola media che frequentavo. Invece di comprare la merenda mettevo i soldi da parte e così ogni giorno, durante la ricreazione, vedevo i miei compagni di classe mangiare gustose merende mentre io facevo il digiuno. Ma il digiuno non mi pesava affatto perchè avevo un obbiettivo da raggiungere!
Finito l'anno scolastico sono andato da mio padre e gli ho mostrato i soldi che avevo risparmiato. Ancora ricordo lo sguardo sorpreso di mio padre. Mio padre ha apprezzato i miei sacrifici e mi ha detto: va bene oggi andiamo a comprare la Nintendo che tanto desideri!
I soldi che avevo raccolto non erano sufficienti ma erano una buona parte e mio padre ha aggiunto la parte mancante. Ancora ricordo l'emozione quando ho preso in mano per la prima volta il joypad grigio con i tasti rossi :) Ancora oggi conservo con molta cura la mia Nintendo 8 Bit
Papà mi compri la Nintendo Switch?
Ho spiegato a mia figlia che la Nintendo Switch è un regalo costoso e le ho raccontato come mi sono conquistato la mia Nintendo quando avevo pochi anni più di lei. Il giorno dopo mia figlia ha iniziato a raccogliere tutte le monetine che vedeva e trovava per casa per fare la stessa cosa che avevo fatto io quando ero un bambino.
Qualche giorno prima del suo settimo compleanno ha chiesto ai nonni e agli zii di regalarle i soldi al posto dei regali.
Chiara non ha raccolto la cifra necessaria per comprare la Nintendo Switch ma come aveva fatto mio padre con me io ho fatto lo stesso con mia figlia e ho aggiunto la parte mancante. Dopo tanti anni Super Mario è entrato nuovamente in casa mia, non quello che conoscevo io ma un Mario meno squadrettato, in tre dimensioni e decisamente più figo :)
Oggi che sono padre se non avessi problemi di soldi comprerei un gioco che piace tanto a mia figlia e che lei chiama il salta salta: il tappeto elastico.
Prima dell'arrivo del maledetto covid-19, ogni anno, in occasione delle vacanze pasquali e a pochi passi da casa mia, arrivavano le giostre e tra le attrazioni c'era anche un multi tappeto elastico. Nella foto seguente c'è mia figlia che salta felice e contenta.
Ci sono tanti tappeti elastici più piccoli ed economici e alla mia portata anche se poco resistenti e duraturi ma io e la mia famiglia abitiamo in un appartamento e un tappeto elastico proprio non ci entra in casa.... Prima di comprare un tappeto elastico come quello della foto in alto dovrei prima comprare una casa con un bel giardino e in quel caso si che mi servirebbero tanti tanti soldi. Mia figlia adora saltare sul tappeto elastico che è un suo grande oggetto del desiderio.
Se i soldi non sono un problema, dopo aver comprato una bella casa grande, perchè non comprare il tappeto elastico più costoso?
Sono andato su Amazon e ho cercato il tappeto elastico dal prezzo più alto ed ho trovato l'articolo che puoi vedere nell'immagine seguente.

Mia figlia sarebbe felicissima di trovare questo tappeto elastico nella sua stanza (anche se poi ci starebbe solo questo e sarebbe costretta anche a dormirci sul tappeto elastico :)
Ma siamo sicuri che comprare un articolo tanto costoso porti sempre tanta felicità?
Io credo di no e soprattutto quando si parla di giochi e giocattoli. Tra l'altro avere tanti soldi permette di soddisfare sempre e subito un proprio desiderio di acquisto o se si è genitori una richiesta da parte di un figlio. Ma avere l'oggetto del desiderio sempre e subito può fare più male che bene. L'attesa è la parte più importante del piacere di ottenere qualcosa e anche se avessi tanti soldi cercherei sempre di far desiderare a mia figlia un gioco prima di comprarglielo e soprattutto se il gioco è molto costoso.
Inoltre i giochi molto costosi sono spesso i giochi che vengono utilizzati di meno nel tempo perchè quasi perfetti, pronti all'uso e perchè non richiedono nessuno sforzo creativo o di costruzione... I giochi più costosi sono spesso più un motivo per vantarsi che un occasione di gioco e di divertimento. Se mi guardo indietro nel tempo, i miei ricordi più felici sono legati a giochi e giocattoli poco costosi: un pallone da calcio, una macchinina, una manciata di biglie colorate, una scatola di mattoncini lego, un divertente gioco da tavolo...tutti giochi da fare in compagnia insieme ad altri bimbi o giochi che permettono di usare creatività e fantasia.
